Instagram is an amazing photo sharing network, but it’s only fun when other people are following you. However, if you signed up recently, the chances are that you don’t have many followers. Thankfully, there are some simple and non-spammy techniques that anyone can use to gain followers on Instagram, and in this article you’re going to discover these techniques.
My @iPhonePS Instagram Account
I still remember how frustrating it was when I started my Instagram account. For the first few weeks I had practically no followers, and nobody liked or commented my photos. That’s when I decided to gain more followers on Instagram using the following techniques.
Step 1: Pick a Clear Focus For Your Account
Before you do anything else, you should pick a clear focus for your Instagram account. If your goal is to showcase your best photography, you should stick to it and never post poor quality photos of you hanging out with friends. The people who want to see your artistic photos probably don’t want to see the sandwich you ate for lunch today.
Some Instagramers have found success in posting small snapshots of their daily life in a way that their followers can get to know them better, but this is much harder than simply sharing great photography.
Unless you’re a celebrity, the chances are that only people who know you in real life would be interested in following your daily activities.
To give you an example, I use my @iPhonePS Instagram account to share my best iPhone photos. People are happy to follow me because they know that I only post interesting iPhone photos. I would never post photos of me hanging out with friends since the majority of my followers don’t want to see them.
Step 2: Make Your Account Look Great
When you’ve picked a clear focus for your account (such as sharing your best iPhone photos) you want to do everything you can to make your account look great.
While an interesting description and a cool profile photo can help, it’s far more important that your photo feed looks great, because that’s what people will look at when they make a decision about following you.
Before you move on to the next step, you should build a portfolio of 20 high-quality photos that match the focus of your account, and you should make sure that there are no ugly or irrelevant photos in your photo feed.
Learn how to take better iPhone photos by practicing creating photos with good composition that will catch the viewer’s eye. And experiment with shooting in different types of light to create more stunning photos.
Check out our great video tutorial that will teach you 7 Simple Tricks For Using Light To Create Beautiful iPhone Photos.
Before they start following you, people will look at your feed and ask themselves, “Do I want to see photos like this on my Instagram feed?”
If you post boring photos, silly text screenshots, or what you ate for lunch today, the chances are that many people don’t want to see that on their Instagram feed. Delete your old photos if you have to, and remember that quality is more important than quantity.
If you take photos with your iPhone, sign up for my iPhone photography email tips where I share free iPhone photography video tutorials that you won’t find anywhere on this website.
Spending time to improve your iPhone photos will definitely pay off when you try to gain more followers on Instagram.
Step 3: Leverage Your Existing Channels
When your Instagram profile finally looks great, it’s time to let the world know about it, and the easiest way to get started is to leverage your existing channels and platforms.
If you go to instagram.com/username you’ll get a direct link to your Instagram profile, which you can then share on Facebook, Twitter, your blog and other platforms you may have.
You can also go through your email contacts and send a quick email telling people that you’ve signed up for Instagram, explaining what kind of photos you’re going to post, and asking people to follow you if they’re interested.
Depending on the size of your network, this is a great way to gain your first 50 to 100 Instagram followers.
Step 4: Get In Touch With Other Instagram Users
When people from your existing network are already following you, it’s time to reach out to more people who will potentially be interested in seeing your photos.
Forget about posting a hundred hashtags, asking for shoutouts, trading likes for likes or follows for follows. None of that works. I got a shoutout from an account with 150K followers and it only got me about ten new followers.
The best way to get someone’s attention on Instagram is to leave a nice and thoughtful comment on one of their photos. Don’t just say “nice” or “great photo.”
Say something thoughtful or explain why you like that photo. When you leave a comment like that, the person will usually be happy to also check out your photos and potentially follow you.
Never ask people you don’t know to follow you – this will only annoy them. But if you leave a nice and thoughtful comment about one of their photos – and if your Instagram feed looks great – many of them will be happy to follow you back.
Now, how do I leave hundreds of great comments without going crazy?
First, you don’t want to do that from a mobile device. You can leave good comments so much faster from a computer. Go to IconoSquare, log in with your Instagram account, search for a hashtag that relates to the focus of your Instagram account, and leave comments whenever you have something to say about the photos that appear in that hashtag.
If you post photos of cars, search for hashtags like #Cars, #SportsCars and #BMW as people who use those hashtags are more likely to follow an account about cars. For iPhone photography you can try hashtags like #iPhoneography, #iPhoneOnly and so on.
You should only comment on photos that were posted within the last day or two, and that have less than five comments. If there are 50 other comments already, the chances are that nobody will notice your comment. This strategy may seem like a lot of work, but it won’t take you very long to leave thoughtful comments on IconoSquare.
Unlike the scam techniques that some people use to gain followers on Instagram, this technique will only get you real followers who actually want to see your photos and who will continue to engage with them over time.
Step 5: Keep Your Followers Engaged
There’s no point in building a following on Instagram unless you keep your followers engaged, and the most important thing you can do is post high-quality photos on a regular basis. You should try to post every day, but also remember that quality always beats quantity.
On the other hand, if you post multiple photos at once, there’s a good chance that you’ll annoy some of your followers who will unfollow you because they don’t want to see so many photos from you. To make sure that doesn’t happen, you should spread out your posts evenly and never post more than one photo within a six hour period.
Finally, when your followers leave comments and start discussions with you, make sure you always respond. Even a simple gesture like saying “thanks” for positive comments will make your followers happy and engaged.
You can see how I apply these tips and techniques at my @iPhonePS Instagram account.
Alaa says
Completely agree with your tips! IG is a wonderful world to know other iPhoneographers and enjoy each other’s work. The problem of these kinds of apps for followers is that it will only increase the no. of ghosts for your account.
Sharing some thoughts, what I notice in IG is that you have different directions of photography. Many of my friends are sharing pics of their personal life and screenshots or written text posts which was really annoying to my eyes at first, so I made another account only for sharing social life moments.
Each time I like to please my eyes with the beauty of photography art, I sign to my main photography account. It also annoying though to sign in and out of your accounts.
I hope IG considers that in their next updates.. to categorize your followings regarding their direction and taste.
Thanks Emil for posting varied topics!

Thank you Alaa for the thoughtful comment!
I know what you’re saying about friends posting text screenshots, etc… which is why I don’t follow them.Facebook is more than enough for that stuff in my life.
Michael Ofei says
Emil, it’s such a relief to know that I don’t have to use hashtags and follow tactics to build a following on Instagram. Great content man.
What are your thoughts on following people in your personal networks? See I would prefer to just have my feed filled with other amazing iphoneographers so I can learn and be inspired…..and not have my feed filled with friends selfie’s. However I feel rude for not following them as they have followed me. It seems petty but I’m curious to know if you had the same challenges when you started on Instagram. If so, how did you handle it?
Thanks
Michael
Emil Pakarklis says
Hi Michael,
Of course I’ve had the same challenges, and generally I just don’t follow them except the few people who are the closest to me. I’d say Facebook is more than enough for friends stuff, so I keep Instagram for photography only.

Hi Emil,
I am new to Instagram and your tips on building a following are going to be so helpful. I am NOT the kind of person who will ask for a follow (and I don’t think I have ever, ever, ever followed someone on Twitter, Facebook, etc. whose first contact with me was saying, “Oh I followed you so you should follow me.”, that is just rude!) so I’m really glad to learn about other ways to build a following!
I will want to follow you, because I LOVE beautiful photography!
Peace, Love and Joy,
Joyce
Emil Pakarklis says
Hi Joyce,
Happy you find my tips helpful! I never follow anyone who asks me to follow them, that’s just not how social media works.
Carlene Fowlkes says
Hi Emil,
Thank you so much for this information. I was becoming so discouraged with Instagram, it just seems really difficult to get followers, and I agree with Joyce – not asking for follows. This information is invaluable! I just started a small business but folks keep telling me to be personal and post casual photos. I agree with you and will keep my posts focused and relevant to those who enjoy my field. I’d never heard of Statigram. Just logged in and started to comment. SINCERE THANKS!
Emil Pakarklis says
If there’s one thing that annoys me on Instagram it’s people asking for follows.
The bigger question is whether your small business needs to be on Instagram. I think it only makes sense for large mass-market brands like Coca Cola and people in photography and other highly graphical fields.
Remember that you can’t even post links on Instagram!
Carlene Fowlkes says
I hired a social media manager to set me up for exposure and Instagram was one of the platforms. Instagram gives me some exposure but I’m still figuring out just how to use it for business. I post pics of my items and include the website in the comments. I get a little traffic but since this social media thing is pretty Greek to me. Still learning….thanks again for everything.

Those are some great points for gaining good followers, Emil. I found that what works for me is interaction, with honesty. When someone likes a photo of mine, I always try to check out their Instagram posts and make comments and like the ones that appeal to me. You are right, it is about interaction and responding to dialogue. That is what makes it social media!

I think here the key too is to remember quality, not quantity matters (though you seem to have both!). If you have 2000 disengaged followers who are actually bots, or 500 very engaged followers who appreciate and follow your work constantly- I’d think the 500 would be better any day. 🙂

Thanks for sharing this information, Emil. I recently started a 365 day project and wanted to gain more followers so I took to liking and commenting on at least 20 related images a day. I started my IG account few years ago and treat it like facebook or twitter (sharing personal photos. nothing interesting) but now I want to be more artistic with my account and want to make my gallery looks better. But my old photos are so “ugly” and I want to delete them but I don’t want to delete them because they are memories.
i could start over. but my friends told me not to.
I just want to know your advice

Hi. Why not set up a new account for your artistic photos and make sure it’s public so that anyone can find and follow you? That way you can keep your private account to share your personal photos with friends, but you also get to start afresh with a great set of artistic photos. 🙂

I am an illustrator who illustrates funny characters on photos. I just got started on instagram ( https://instagram.com/cherlyn_chong/ ). I think what really gains you followers is simply the quality of your pictures and how you tell a story. I don’t like to follow back because usually they have horrible pictures. Also, those are the people who will unfollow you in a heartbeat because they are only out for themselves, so why do you want them? Those I follow always have 2k followers or more, and there’s a reason why. Great article!

Hi, I just recently downloaded VSCO Cam for my Android phone, and I think that the filters are great! Hi Tiana. Glad you’re enjoying VSCO Cam – it’s a fantastic app isn’t it? This was really helpful. I am trying to get a lot of followers but only have 5 photos for now. And they are all of two different outfits. The shots are all very different but the look is the same, would you say that it is okay to post a few of these to get the ball rolling and focus on switching it up in the future once I’m more settled?
I don’t want to start boring my followers now, but I have also only had one photoshoot so I don’t have a lot of variety.

I love using iconosquare to comment on people’s photo’s under different hastags. I’m not sure about everyone else but I type much faster on a keyboard than with my thumbs on my phone. It also enables me to leave longer comments like open-ended questions (questions that cannot be answered with yes/no/maybe) where as when I’m on my phone because I’m out and about I only want to leave a few words in an effort to manage my time and hit more photos. Plus, I can only see one photo at a time. Iconosquare makes it easy to see multiple photo’s at once, so I can cherry pick which ones I “like” and then comment on the same photo’s or different photo’s. Just remember that you can only “like” 50 photo’s and/or leave 350 comments per hour. That wasn’t mentioned and I feel like that should have been covered – I doubt anyone can leave 350 legit comments in an hour but I may be underestimating how bad some people want followers!
My instagram is about my lifestyle & travel blog so even though I’m not a celebrity, I still like to post “selfies” or outfit photo’s and photo’s of my daily life but mainly I post one photo a day of some kind of positive quote or message because I feel like ANYONE can relate to that, vs maybe only women interested in fashion might like the picture I post of my shoes. So I guess my question is how to I market that kind of life style? I don’t travel somewhere new every single day so putting out photo’s of the road, ect is kind of hard. I’d tried to go back through my personal IG & saved photo’s from past trips – would that be okay to post or is that a no-no? Should I be transparent and say they are old photo’s?
Laura says
People don’t care how they do it. The just want to stand out and get as many followers followers as possible without thinking about the consequences. There are many websites like http://instagramfollowers.website selling followers and likes but i wouldn’t advise anyone trying to create a long term project to use them. A good Instagram account is grown organically and should be nurtured with the relationships you create with your followers and other users in your niche.

TommyThePretty says
Ethics is an important aspect, unfortunately too often neglected. I have got a pretty good method to attract new followers, and iconosqure is a crucial part of it. You need to go some place where lots of posts are made, take a picture and geotag it, and then follow everybody who made the same thing in the same location. Most of people feel engaged in such situation, so many would follow you back. Or you can search for people with some commonly shared interests using Iconosquare. To increase the feedback you should, of course, also like and comment. After that you’ll have to unfollow those who are not interested in your account, and here you may face some difficulties if you’ve added to many people. Sometimes I have to deal with thousands, so I found a service fast-unfollow.com allowing to unfollow up to 5000 users per day. If it’s just a personal account and you only manage dozens or hundreds – it’s still useful because of the welcome gift of 1000 free unsubscriptions. If your instagram is for businesses, not for pleasure, its utility rises dramatically.

Love the blog. It’s really about the quality not the quantity. Having hundreds or thousands of followers but only having a few likes to the post doesn’t add up.
