How To Become Instagram Famous: Introduction
When I first signed up to Instagram, I struggled to get my first 30 followers. Even my best photos were getting only a few likes. And I wasn’t getting any feedback on my pictures.
That’s when I realized I needed to learn how to get popular on Instagram. And now I have over 128,000 followers.
From personal experience, I can tell you that Instagram gets a lot more fun when more people are following you!
Read on to find out how to get famous on Instagram… and gain more genuine followers who really appreciate your photography.
Step 1: Build A Stunning Instagram Feed
Knowing how to become famous on Instagram involves several key factors. But the most important is to make your Instagram profile look great. Nobody is going to follow a profile that has poor quality images.
If your goal is to showcase your photography, your photos must look amazing. It’s better to post nothing than to post a bad photo.
The first thing to do is upload about 15 – 20 of your best images. If you don’t have that many, keep working on it. Make sure you only post high quality eye-catching photos.
If you’re starting out on Instagram, it’s a good idea to improve your iPhone photography first. People only like to follow photographers with interesting photos.
To improve your photography, work on creating images with excellent composition. And learn how to use light to create more stunning and dramatic photos.
Learn how to use your camera’s settings. You might also consider using a more advanced iPhone camera app. Edit your Instagram photos with a photo editor app to ensure they look their best before sharing.
Taking time to improve your photography will more than pay off when you try to get Instagram famous.
Keep in mind that certain types of photos do particularly well on Instagram. In my experience beach photos, reflections, silhouettes and sunsets get the most likes. Portrait photos are generally not as popular.
This sunset reflection photo got more likes than a lot of my other photos that I’ve posted on Instagram.
If you want to get popular on Instagram, post the kind of photos your followers want to see. This is why I often share beach and sunset photos.
If you want more followers on Instagram, it’s a good idea to post the kind of photos that get more likes.
If you share photos of you hanging out with friends, don’t expect people to start following you. These aren’t the kind of photos any serious photographer would want to share.
Never post text images or jokes, no matter how cool you think the text is. Also, avoid posting random screenshots as most people don’t like them.
Before you go to the next step, make sure your Instagram account is public. If your photos aren’t public, you’ll have a much harder time attracting new followers.
To make your Instagram feed public, go to your profile and tap the Settings icon near the top right of the screen. Go to Account Privacy and make sure the Private Account slider is off.
Finally, write a profile description that will motivate people to follow you. Describe yourself in a meaningful way to attract the right kind of followers. Don’t overcomplicate this step. Something like “iPhone landscape photographer and surfer” is all you need.
Step 2: Get Your Instagram Photos Noticed
Once you’ve uploaded some great photos, it’s time to attract everyone’s attention. Your aim is to get more Instagram followers, as well as more likes and comments on your photos.
In this section, you’ll learn how to get noticed on Instagram. There are several ways to get your photos noticed and gain more followers.
First, reach out to your existing friends and followers from other social networks. Since those people already know you, they’re more likely to become a follower. You can send a message or share a post inviting your friends to follow you.
To get your Instagram photos in front of more people, consider using hashtags. Adding hashtags when you post a photo means your image will show up in Instagram’s hashtag feeds.
To add a hashtag, use the caption box when you’re posting a photo. Type the hashtag symbol # followed by an appropriate word to describe your image.
Ensure you only add relevant hashtags to your photos. There’s no need to spam your posts with dozens of irrelevant hashtags. That will only make you look like a spammer.
Are you posting a sunset beach photo with silhouettes? Use the hashtags #beach, #silhouette, #sunset. If you’ve used a particular app to edit your photo, you could use the app name as your hashtag.
Another easy way to get your photos in front of other Instagramers is to follow a lot of people.
Find someone with photos like yours, and start following the followers of that person. They’ll get notified that you’re following them, and many will check out your profile.
But knowing how to become popular on Instagram involves more than just following people. You also need to interact with people that you follow. If you follow someone and don’t like or comment on any of their photos, you’re considered to be a ghost follower.
You’ll get better results if you comment on the photos of people you’re following. That way they’ll know you’re a real person.
You might find that following lots of people is impractical. If so, you can still get a lot of exposure by leaving meaningful comments on photos – even if you’re not following them.
If you leave a positive comment, the photographer may check out your profile. And if your profile is good, you’ll get a new follower.
Your comments are more likely to get noticed by people who don’t have lots of likes or followers. You’ll also have more chance of getting noticed if you comment on recent photos.
Leaving comments on the iPhone can be slow and tedious. So you might want to use a web service such as IconoSquare. This allows you to leave comments from your computer.
Ensure you only leave comments for people who have a high chance of becoming your followers.
So how do you find such people? It’s easy! All you need to do is use hashtags to search for people who do the same kind of photography as you. You can do this in the Tags section of Instagram’s search facility.
Are you a landscape photographer? Search for hashtags such as #landscapes, #landscapephotography or #mountains. People using these hashtags are more likely to enjoy your profile and follow you.
You can also browse through photos with a particular hashtag using IconoSquare.
Step 3: Engage With Your Instagram Followers
Everyone gets obsessed with the number of Instagram followers. But becoming Insta famous isn’t just about the number of followers you have.
Keeping your followers happy and engaged is important too. Your aim is to build a relationship with them and get the most out of your Instagram experience.
Post photos on a regular basis so people don’t forget who you are. I aim to share a photo every day on my @iPhonePS account. I’ve built a large and responsive community of people who look forward to seeing more photos from me.
But at the same time, you don’t want to post too often. Sharing lots of photos at once since will take up a lot of space in the feed of your followers.
If somebody doesn’t like one of your photos, the chances are they’ll still keep following you. But when you post three photos in a row, you’re more likely to lose a follower.
For this reason, I don’t recommend posting more than once every six hours. Remember that quality always beats quantity. It’s better to share only great photos, even if that means posting less often.
Make your photos more intriguing and valuable by adding captions. Ask a question, tell the story of how you came to take this picture, or add a useful tip that relates to the image.
And finally, be nice to your followers. Respond to their comments and questions. You’ll stand out if you say “Thanks” or answer their question.
Interacting with your followers is a great way to keep them happy and engaged. There’s nothing more rewarding than building lasting relationships with your Instagram followers.

Your tips are awesome. I want to add one thing LIKING. Simply LIKING the right persons photo’s can lead them to you. I am a Disney World iPhonographer. So I love to browse the #disneyworld tag and I like pics. I try to pick ones who not many people have liked (the person appreciates it more) and if the pic is really good I will go to their profile and like a few more. A lot of the time, when they log back in and see the same person liked more than one of their pictures they follow up by checking out my profile. They don’t all follow me, but they do like and comment.

Regrading ghosts, just ignore them altogether. They really do no harm to you, so you can just leave them there. Even if you block them all now, you’ll get more in the future.
I don’t think your account will get hacked. Just keep your password safe and unique, only use reputable third party services, and you’ll be fine.
About selfies, it depends what you want to achieve on Instagram. They will help you get the attention of opposite sex and your friends will like them, but they’re not good for building a quality audience that you could share your photography with.

I’d like to thank you for your advice on getting followers and building a trusted account. It’s interesting how quickly social media is changing the game for individuals, not to mention businesses and companies. I’ve had success posting up part of my inventory on the app. Unfortunately this cap at 49 followers per hour really damaged my experience on the network. It’s understandable that instagram aims to block spam and fake accounts. However wouldn’t it be better if a verification system would be implemented, that after being verified you’d be able to follow as many people as you’d like?

For a niche company like yours I would recommend leaving thoughtful comments on the photos of people who are interested in what you have to offer. Many of them will gladly respond and follow you.
How can you find such people?
Through relevant hashtags such as #coins, #oldcoins, etc.
Leave as many thoughtful comments as possible on photos that already have interesting coins in them as such people are more likely to be interested in your Instagram account and ultimately becoming your customers. There’s no need of attracting followers who don’t care about coins!
To speed up the process, use a web service such as Statigram for commenting. As far as I know, there are no limits to how many good comments you can leave!

1. Your photos must be beautiful and interesting. Try to use popular photo editing apps like Snapseed, VSCOcam, Afterlight, Mextures. It’s very easy to find them in App Store.

It depends on what your goals are. If you want to build an audience for your photography, simply share your best and most interesting photos that have aesthetic and artistic value.
If you want to make new friends and broadcast your personality, I might not be the right person to ask. My best guess is that you should share fun snippets of your everyday life, like the things you do with friends, the places you go to, etc.

This is a useful article with insightful information echoing much of what I know to be true and some things I didn’t yet know.
Being a woman in the world with many interests, among them making my art, traveling, photography, and portraits of my daughter – it has been both a pleasure and a difficulty for me to find the balance to have IG be as honed as the most successful accounts are.
I’ve come to treat my account as a visual and literary journal, like a snapshot blog with a thought on what’s happening in the moment for me that could be relevant to others. The people I follow who I like the best do something similar, but I find that they are more focused in their content – or they simply don’t write at all and keep their photography limited to one style.
I truly enjoy when I post a photo and receive likes and comments – and interact with others – that’s the whole point. What are your thoughts about editing my existing account (deleting photos) that in retrospect are clearly not in alignment with where my focus is now? Is that in any way damaging?
Also – I’ve realized I’ve overdone it with hashtags… thanks for that – I never want to be spammy.

Hi Tara,
It can certainly be a good idea to use your Instagram as a “snapshots of your life” collection. Some of the most interesting accounts out there use this approach.
The downside is that unless you’re someone famous, only people who know you will be motivated to learn about your life in so much detail. If your goal is to build a large audience, focusing on great photography will probably work better.
I wouldn’t delete old photos as long as the last 20 or so are more or less consistent. Very few people will scroll down more than that, and it’s good to keep them so that your account becomes a chronicle of your life through photography. It will be really interesting to look back at them in a few years.

I deleted my Facebook to get rid of the negative shout outs I can see in each and every morning and started instagram. But then I realised the more I study instagram- the more I realise the greediness of the people to have solo many followers. I tried to do it yesterday but (- doesn’t make sense)

You’re making a great point here. Everyone reading this article should take a second to stop and think why they actually want to get more followers. In my case it was getting feedback for my photography, promoting this blog, and starting a weekly photo contest.
But if your goal is to get ego boost or street cred, you probably shouldn’t be getting obsessed with the number of followers you have.
Always remember that the relationship you have with your audience is far more important than the number of people following you!
You have to have great photos that are interesting and different. Take shots from different angles and make them unique. Try to start a trend that is cool but not abused like fashion. There are so many people that post about fashion which makes it very competitive and hard to stand out. If you take pictures of cool or funny things that you see on your day to day activities but add a twist (ie taking the shot from a cool angle, adding something to it, lighting etc) then people will be interested in what you are posting. So true… I totally appreciate the article and the work you’ve put in it. That is what people don’t want usually to do. They wish to be popular and famous and rich without working enough. They want to take but not give and usually they get what deserved. So the problem solves itself. People who are that lazy, they can’t even type the whole sentence will probably always suck with whatever they do. And this is sad.

I’m a sports editor and I don’t know how this would help me cuz I just got anacvount with 1.8k folowers and it gets like 10 likes everytine I post a sports photo which I s what my page is working torwards! But I can’t gets many active followers

You could try following the people who like your photos and leaving positive feedback on their images. That way they’re more likely to come back and visit your profile again, and hopefully follow you.
i took in a few accounts (some famous people, some not so famous people) an d my calculations show that generally 6%-10% of followers are your average likes… like say you have 60 followers. another factor is content. if you have good content, you’ll probably exceed 10%. if not, 4%-6%.

I have got a pretty good method to attract new followers, and iconosqure.com is a crucial part of it. You need to go some place where lots of posts are made, take a picture and geotag it, and then follow everybody who made the same thing in the same location. Most of people feel engaged in such situation, so many would follow you back. Or you can search for people with some similarities using Iconosquare (still wanna call it statigr.am). To increase the number you should, of course, also like and comment. After that you’ll have to unfollow those who are not interested in your account, and here you may face some difficulties if you’ve added to many people. Sometimes I have to deal with thousands, so I found a service fast-unfollow.com allowing to unfollow up to 5000 users per day. So I do all of those things, sometimes I post twice within 6 hours but I know people that post at least 6 photos at once and gets 100’s of likes. (Maybe fake likes idk). I post photography and they are good and I know they are. I get around 30-50 and sometimes 60-80 but I have 472 followers which is insane. I often go to my followers accounts and like and comment on photos, to try to catch there attention, doesn’t seem to work that much. My other friend who just started her drawing account already has more likes then me which is weird considering my account has even up for years. Is there a reason for this? I also hashtag when I can remember, now they made it so the hashtaged photo appears on the hashtag by when you posted the photo so if you forget it’s a lot harder to get liked.
What are your thoughts on posting multiple pics at a time so you’ll keep a theme? For instance, I post 3 in a row with a white border and then 3 without. I post 3 at a time so the feed looks even. Is it bad though that I post 3 in a row?
Personally I really love feeds that post three similar images at a time – I think it’s really effective! 🙂

Hi Michael. It all depends on how you use them. If you apply a filter at full strength, it often ruins a photo as the effect is over-bearing. But if you dial back the strength, filters can enhance an image and add different moods to your photos. A lot of top iPhone photographers use VSCO and Instagram filters to create a certain look and feel in their photos, so filters definitely aren’t seen as tacky when used in moderation.

Hi Amber. I would advise deleting any photos that aren’t excellent quality or that don’t fit with the professional image you want to create. Once you have a great looking photo feed, ensure your Instagram account is set to public so that anyone can view your photos. Then start following other fashion accounts and interact with these accounts by liking and commenting on their photos – this will hopefully get you noticed and attract more people to your account. And don’t forget to add a few relevant hashtags to each image so that your photos appear in the hashtag feeds. Good luck! 🙂
